This is something that keeps coming up - I’m seeing it within my own life and also with my clients. ‘Trust the Process’ is what I keep coming back to - an anchor to the present moment. The human mind likes safety - to know the outcome however, in reality, we don’t know the future or what comes next.
There’s a reason we don’t know. Have you ever thought about why humans don't know the future? Or why we don't get the insight for how our lives are going to pan out? I believe it is because we wouldn't learn from our mistakes and we wouldn't grow from the learning if we knew it all. We would take the easy option of going straight to the end point of what brings us the most happiness. Of course we would. Taking the easy route wouldn't lead us to learning to navigate being a human. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is easy for me - I find going through the process painstaking at times like any other human and there are times I despair in not knowing what is to come. I have a human mind after all. I know from personal experience that I get frustrated when I am not where I think I should be and try to rush the process and jump to the end. It never ends well - I usually have to go back and redo the steps I tried to skip. I love watching a client's process unfold - they come to me with a challenging emotion or situation and by holding the space for them to explore the process, they come out at the end having an appreciation for it and make light bulb connections to find their own solutions. But, the process cannot be rushed. There is no manual of do X and you will get Y or that follow A through to Z and you will have achieved your desired outcome. By going through the process, you gain clarity of what it was there to show you all along - not what you thought it should be. I love watching the magic of the process and seeing the growth as a result. It's what I love about holding space for others. The magic lies within the process as it unfolds. In this moment, we are where we are meant to be. Bringing curiosity and presence to the process as it unfolds is how we go with the flow of our lives instead of resisting or trying to control how we think it is meant to be. What if what wants to unfold is more magical than we can ever imagine? We often confine ourselves to the limitations of our minds - we place limitations upon our own future possibilities when we try so hard to control what comes next. What if we trust the process as it is, where we are now and that we will be where we are meant to be? When looking back on overcoming challenges in my life, I have learnt so much from being in the process that I’ve realised the process itself is more important than the destination. The irony is, there is no destination, the final destination is that we cease to live. So, why not enjoy the process of living and learning what the process is here to teach us? So much growth comes from going through it - it's where the magic lies. What does trusting the process mean to you? What did you learn from the last challenge you overcame? I am in the process of leaving my 18 year long NHS career to pursue my own business - it is both scary and exciting. My mind wants to cling onto security and put me off from jumping into the unknown. Yet, my heart knows that fear will keep me small and I eon't achieve my highest potential if I stay with the fear. In NLP coaching, we hold the belief 'there is no failure - only feedback' and so I am practising what I teach and giving myself permission to jump into the unknown because what if I soar to new possibilities that the fear of my mind could never imagine? Watch this space as my journey unfolds - I will share the learning with you.
