We talk in metaphors all the time and do so unconsciously. Metaphors are a window into our inner world without even realising. As a coach, I attentively listen to my clients and their metaphors to have insight into their world and their struggles. Here, I write about my metaphor describing my journey becoming an emotional wellbeing coach. ~ ~ The unchartered sea ~ “My training journey has been like setting out on a boat across the sea alone with just a life jacket. Not knowing how long I would be gone for or where my final destination would be but what I did know was that I was heading somewhere magical. Feeling nervous because I find the deep blue sea scary; the unknown lying beneath the surface, plus the fact I get sea sick told me this going to be challenging. I also knew that the fear of being outside my comfort zone was a sign that the challenge would be worth it and I would become a different version of myself by the time I got there. The question is, where is there? It was a year ago when I set out on my glittery fairy light boat and took out my map from the magic pocket of my life jacket and noticed it was quite dusty so I blew off the dust to uncover what was really there all along. The sea was choppy and unstable which meant I needed to find a way to stay calm and steady to weather the storm. Something interesting happened - I realised that the map couldn’t help me for where I was going so I tucked it away and asked myself ‘what would happen if I just trusted where I was going and who I was becoming?’ The answer came to me like a lighthouse guides lost ships at sea - a beacon of light...water doesn’t ask where it needs to go - it just flows! So, I closed my eyes and I tapped into that part of myself that just knew - I felt it in my body. That’s when I realised it’s not about having the perfect map to tell you where to go but instead it’s about trusting in the unknown and allowing the journey to take you where you need to be - because there’s a part of us that always knows. To know that life is about being curious; curious about the unknown and allowing the magic to be revealed to us instead of trying to control the outcome. We just need to be brave enough to take the journey and leap into the unknown and to believe that we have everything we need inside of us. So, I know you’re wondering about my final destination and the answer is I don’t know because I’m still not there yet but we can be curious together where that might be and know that wherever it is, it’s where I’m meant to be; maybe the destination will keep changing because we’re always learning and growing. What I did find along my journey were amazing brave comrades that I didn’t know I needed but now I’ve found them I want to take them onwards with me. I know wherever my journey takes me, they will be there to help keep me afloat just like a life jacket. Maybe you will wonder where you are right now but one thing I know for sure is you can trust it’s where you’re meant to be.” Stacie GlassMidwife | Coach | Reiki practitioner
